KEVIN CARTER South African photojournalist Kevin Carter passed away at age 33 on July 27, 1994. Kevin was born in South Africa in 1961 and began his career in the 1980s, covering conflicts in Sudan, Somalia, Angola, Mozambique, Bosnia, Rwanda, and South Africa. His assignments took him to many troubled areas, including the Kurds fleeing Iraq. In 1993, Kevin won the Pulitzer Prize for his powerful photograph of a starving Sudanese child stalked by a vulture. He described it as "the most powerful photograph I have ever taken". His other photographic works included a series on the last days of apartheid in South Africa, for which he received the Overseas Press Club's Robert Capa Gold Medal. Kevin devoted much of his life to photojournalism, and his work helped to bring attention to the suffering of many in the world. He will be remembered not only for the passionate images he captured, but for his unwavering commitment to seeking truth and shedding light on injustices of the world.
