Lee Kuan Yew, founding Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore and one of the greatest statesmen of our time, passed away peacefully on the 23rd of March 2015 at the age of 91. Mr. Lee dedicated his life to transforming Singapore from a sleepy colony with no natural resources into one of the most prosperous and vibrant nations in the world. His years of leadership as Prime Minister were marked by farsighted decisions, uncompromising dedication to nation-building, and a capacity for decisive action. His efforts helped create the safe, prosperous and progressive Singapore that we enjoy today. Mr. Lee was born in Singapore in 1923 and attended Raffles Institution and later Raffles College before becoming a lawyer in 1950. He quickly rose to prominence in Singapore's politics and was elected Prime Minister in 1959, later becoming the first Prime Minister of the country in 1965 following Singapore's independence. As Prime Minister he oversaw a number of projects to develop and modernise Singapore, including the promotion of industrialisation, modernisation of public housing, urban redevelopment, and improving public services. Mr. Lee's great vision and dedication made Singapore a resilient home for its citizens and a desirable destination for international businesses. As a result, Singapore was able to confidently take its place alongside the other nations of the world. Lee Kuan Yew's passing is a great loss, but his legacy remains a powerful source of inspiration for the generations to come, and his good work will continue to shape the future of Singapore. He is survived by his two sons, the current Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Yang, and his wife, Madam Kwa Geok Choo. He will be sorely missed.
