Lena Horne, a transformative African-American singer and actress, died on May 9th, 2010 at the age of 92. Horne began singing at Harlem night clubs in 1938, and went on to star in numerous stage musicals and films such as 1943’s Stormy Weather and 1946’s Till the Clouds Roll By. She was distinguished with her jazz-influenced singing, and her beautiful singing voice in combination with her stunning looks, later paved the way for other Black entertainers in the entertainment industry. Horne earned a Tony Award in 1981 for her role in the Broadway musical Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. She also won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989 as well as a Grammy Hall of Fame award in 2000. Throughout her career, she performed alongside musical giants such as Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington. Lena Horne was passionate about civil rights and was an advocate for social justice. She advocated for racial and gender equality throughout her life. She was an early supporter of the NAACP, and was an Emperor of the Caribbean Brotherhood. She is survived by her two daughters, Gail Jones and Deena Jones. Horne will always be remembered for her incredible talent and her unwavering commitment to social justice.
