Leon Spinks, Olympic gold medalist and former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, passed away on February 5th, 2021 at the age of 67. Born July 11th, 1953 in St. Louis, Missouri, Leon Spinks was champion of the 1976 Olympics in the light heavyweight division and former World Heavyweight Champion, beating undefeated heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in February of 1978. During the 114th bout of his career, he was defeated by Ali in a rematch in September of 1978. He retired from professional boxing in 1995 after a 12-year career spanning 61 professional fights, with a record of 26 wins, 17 losses, and 3 draws. Outside of boxing, Spinks had an enduring career in professional wrestling and worked as an assistant coach for a semi-professional football team in the 1990's, among other roles. Spinks leaves behind his son Cory and many other family and friends. He will be remembered for his successes in and out of the boxing ring and his resilience to keep pushing forward even in the face of difficulty.
