On October 14, 1990, the world lost one of the most acclaimed and beloved composers, Leonard Bernstein. He died at the age of 72. Leonard Bernstein was born in Massachusetts in 1918 and developed an early passion for music and theatre. He studied music with many great teachers and composers, giving him an impressive artistic education. He went on to become a conductor and composer of both classical and Broadway music, spending most of his career working with some of the top orchestras and musicals. He had many notable accomplishments during his time, composing many symphonies, works for solo voices, choruses, musicals, and dances. He also arranged several pieces of popular music, including the legendary West Side Story. Bernstein received a plethora of awards and honors, including the National Medal of the Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Tony Award, Emmy Award, and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He will be remembered for his music, as well as his work in education. The Leonard Bernstein Center for Learning, which promotes music education programs, was established in his honor shortly after his death. He remains a remarkable figure in the music world, and his works will forever be remembered.
