Levon Helm, a much beloved American musician, actor and songwriter, died peacefully in his home on 2012-04-19 at age 71 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Levon was born in Elaine, Arkansas in 1940 and taught himself to play drums, mandolin and guitar as a youngster. He was well-known in the music industry for his strong drumming and singing skills, and for his commitment to the southern roots sound. In the '60s, Helm was one of the founding members of The Band, and served as the group’s drummer, vocalist and songwriter. With The Band, he took part in several iconic performances, including their legendary The Last Waltz appearance with Bob Dylan in 1976. As a solo artist, Levon released six Grammy-winning albums, including his last, Electric Dirt, which won a Grammy for Best Americana Album in 2009. Helm’s musical talents won him legions of fans around the world. His lasting legacy includes the music and memories he left behind, inspiring many others to follow in his footsteps. He is survived by his two daughters and his son, along with countless friends and admirers.
