Mae West, fantasy and entertainer and the artist of the "It ain't no sin" hit, passed away on November 22, 1980 at the age of 87. She was best known for her provocative style of dress and her outspoken personality. Her career spanned six decades and encompassed film, stage, radio, television, and nightclubs. West wrote, produced, directed, and starred in five Broadway shows: Sex (1926), The Drag (1927), The Dice Woman (1928), Pleasure Man (1928), and Diamond Lil (1928). Her plays often revolved around gender conflicts and challenged traditional views of female sexuality. On the silver screen, she starred in several popular films of the 1930s, such as She Done Him Wrong (1933) and I'm No Angel (1933). West also had a tremendously successful musical career, releasing records such as "You Gotta Have Love in Your Heart to Make the World Go 'Round" (1956) and "It Ain't No Sin (To Dance Around in Your Bones)" (1959), both of which were Top 10 hits to this day. West's influence on modern culture remains unmatched, with her signature catchphrase "Come up and see me sometime" and her trademark eyelashes spotted on countless celebrities over the years. Her impact on the performing arts and entertainment world will continue to be celebrated for years to come.
