Magnus Hirschfeld, a pioneering German sexologist and LGBT activist, passed away on May 15, 1935 at the age of 67. A physician and a Jewish homosexual, Hirschfeld dedicated his life to the fight for social equality, both in his private life and in his professional work. He was a staunch advocate for the decriminalization of homosexuality and equal rights for all members of the LGBTQ+ community. As a sexologist, he founded the Institute for Sexual Science, a research institution dedicated to exploring and promoting sex education and gender equality. He was also an outspoken author of many books and studies, a fierce campaigner of sexual freedom, and an early supporter of the LGBT rights movement. Through advocacy and scientific research, Hirschfeld was remarkably ahead of his time, arguing for the destigmatization of marginalised groups in the face of strong social opposition. He will be remembered as one of the earliest and most influential campaigners for LGBTQ+ equality and rights.
