On July 18, 1938, Marie of Romania, Queen Consort of Romania, passed away at the age of 62. Marie was born on October 29, 1875 in Kleinheubach, Bavaria as Marie Alexandra Victoria, Princess of Edinburgh. She was the daughter of Prince Alfred of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. In 1893, Marie married Crown Prince Ferdinand, who became king of Romania in 1914. She had two daughters and two sons. The last of her children, Prince Michael, later became King of Romania. During her reign as Queen Consort of Romania, she won admiration for her efforts to promote and improve public education and culture in Romania. Her reputation abroad was enhanced by her humanitarian work helping refugees and wounded soldiers during World War I. Marie's kindness and generosity won the affection and respect of the Romanian people. She passed away in Romania at the age of 62. May she rest in peace.
