Mel Ferrer, an acclaimed American actor and movie producer, passed away on June 2, 2008, at the age of 90. Ferrer was born on August 25, 1917, in Elberon, New Jersey, to a successful business family and the brother of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and author Jose Ferrer. He was educated at Princeton University, where he developed an interest in theater. His acting career took off in the 1940s when he appeared in a number of Broadway shows, including "The Male Animal" and "The Teahouse of the August Moon". Ferrer made the transition to the big screen in 1947, with his film debut in "A Double Life". He went on to appear in over 70 feature films, some of his best-known roles include "Lili", "War and Peace", "The Sun Also Rises", "Six Bridges to Cross" and “Funny Lady”. He also received a Golden Globe nomination for his work in "Stormy Monday". In addition to his acting career, Ferrer was also an accomplished producer. He was heavily involved in the production of a number of major films, including "The Sun Also Rises" and "War and Peace". He was a founding member of the Beverly Hills-based Independent Producers Group. In 1954, he married the remarkable actress Audrey Hepburn, with whom he had two sons, Sean and Mel Jr. Ferrer was beloved by the entertainment industry. He will be remembered for his memorable performances and his dedication to the craft. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.
