New York Yankees Hall of Fame outfielder Mickey Mantle passed away at the age of 63 on August 13, 1995, in Dallas, Texas. Mantle played for the Yankees from 1951 to 1968, and was a 18-time All-Star, three-time American League Most Valuable Player, and seven-time World Series champion. He was also an influential part of the Yankees' fabled "M&M" Boys, alongside teammate and fellow Hall of Famer, Roger Maris. The three-time World Series MVP is remembered for his iconic switch-hitting style and towering home runs. He retired as a major league leader in walks, strikeouts, and extra base hits. The All-Century Team member was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and the New York Yankees Hall of Fame in 1974. Mantle was an active philanthropist and in 1995, the Mickey Mantle Foundation for Children was established in his honor to fund research in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of life-threatening illnesses in children. His influence on baseball was unparalleled. He will be deeply missed.
