Milton Berle, an American comic actor and TV pioneer, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2002. He was 93 years old. Born in New York City on July 12, 1908, to immigrant Jewish parents, Milton Berle showed his talent for comedy from an early age. He began performing with the Yiddish Theater at age five, and appeared in plays and vaudeville shows alongside his uncle, Phil Berle. In the 1920s, he starred in a touring production of the play the Rabbi and the Priest and became a member of the legendary vaudeville troupe The Four Nyes. Throughout his career, Milton Berle was known as "Uncle Miltie" and "Mr. Television". He was a major star of the Golden Age of Television in the 1950s due to his show, "Texaco Star Theater". On the program, he performed live comedy acts and impersonations that made him a household name. He was also known for his recurring role in the "I Love Lucy" series and his appearances on numerous game shows. Berle was a seven-time Emmy award nominee and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1985. In 1989, he returned to Broadway after more than 25 years away in the unsuccessful production, "Jest A Second." Milton Berle is survived by his wife Lorna, two children, and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one’s head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget time, to forget life, to be at peace. Oscar Wilde
