On 17th August 1988 the world said a sad farewell to Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, former President of Pakistan, who passed away at the age of 64. He will be remembered fondly by his admirers as a soldier, statesman and president who played an important part in Pakistan’s development. He was born in Jalandhar, British-ruled India, in 1924 and attended Islamia College in Lahore where he was a distinguished student. His army career began in the British Indian Army during World War II and in 1947, he joined the newly formed Pakistan Army. He rose through the ranks and in 1971, when Bangladesh was carved from Pakistan, Zia-ul-Haq supported Pakistan’s military action. This event soon led to him being appointed as Chief of Army Staff and he was appointed President of Pakistan in 1977 after ousting the elected prime minister. As president, he enforced strict Sharia law that led to a stronger, more Islamic nation. He also oversaw the country’s economic revitalization, instituting several significant reform measures. During his tenure, he enhanced Pakistan’s image abroad, welcoming many leaders on state visits and making himself an international figure. Zia-ul-Haq will always be remembered for his dedication to the cause of creating a strong and modern Pakistan. He is survived by his wife, children and numerous grandchildren.
