Mulayam Singh Yadav, an influential leader in India's politics, passed away October 10th, 2022 at the age of 82. He will be remembered as the man who held various powerful roles in the Samajwadi Party, some of which include the party's founder and three-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Originally born in November 1939 in Saifai Village in Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh, Yadav studied up to the high school level before entering politics. After a stint in the Indian Army in the 1960s, he took on numerous positions within India's Parliament, commencing with the Lok Sabha in 1967 for four consecutive terms until 1999. For the one year period between 1975-1976, Yadav was the Minister of Agriculture and Land in the government of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In 1989, he formed the Samajwadi Party to form the government of Uttar Pradesh. In 2012, he traveled to London to meet with the then Prime Minister David Cameron in a formal meeting. Over the course of his career as a politician, Yadav sparked reform in several areas, including the fields of education and public medical services. He leaves behind his five children: Akhilesh Yadav, Prateek Singh Yadav, Dharmendra Yadav, Akshay Yadav, and Aditi Singh. May he be remembered for his dedication to reforming India's political system.
