Thelonious Monk, a pioneering and influential jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader, passed away on February 17, 1982, aged 64. Monk is credited with developing the style known today as "bebop" and was a ground-breaking figure in modern jazz music. Throughout his eccentric career, Monk established the unique knack for blending elements of swing and blues with classical art forms. He was renowned for his unusual chord progressions and arrangement of melodies, and was one of the first jazz musicians to incorporate Latin American rhythms, African-American idioms, and avant-garde techniques into his music. His compositions such as "'Round Midnight," "Epistrophy," and "Straight, No Chaser" are still seen as cornerstones of the jazz idiom. He was widely praised for his virtuosity, witty humour, and unique musical personality. He was also awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. Throughout his career, Monk made groundbreaking contributions to the musical arts and his impact will not be forgotten.
