Noor Jehan (1926-2000), the Pakistani music legend, passed away on December 23rd, 2000, at the age of 74. She was greatly praised for her vibrant and passionate strengthening of traditional South Asian music, and for her unique blending of Eastern and Western styles. Noor Jehan's career in music began in the late 1940s, gradually gaining her recognition and success in the South Asian community. Throughout her career, she released over 16,000 songs and film scores in both Urdu and Punjabi. She was both a singer and songwriter, having written over 3,000 songs during her lifetime. Noor Jehan’s immense contribution to music made her an icon and was embraced worldwide over five decades. She was given numerous awards, becoming the first Pakistani musician to win a medal from the Pakistani government. In 2000, she was awarded the ‘ Pride of Performance’ for her lifetime achievements in music and was given a star on the ‘ walk of fame’ in Karachi. She left behind a husband and their children. She will be remembered fondly for her immense influence in the realm of music.
