Olav V, who ruled as King of Norway from 1957 to his death in 1991, passed away at the age of 87 on 17 January 1991. He was born Alexander Edward Christian Frederik on 2 July 1903 in England, was the only son of the then crown prince of Norway, Haakon VII and Maud of Wales. He became King Olav V of Norway on the death of his father in 1957, and is remembered for contributing to Norway's peaceful and progressive development during his time as king. To this end, he assumed an active role in Norwegian political life and facilitated important democratic reforms. He was also known for his powerful influence on Norway's cultural life, setting standards of excellence for the nation in literature, the performing arts, music, and cinema. Olav V was held in high regard and highly respected throughout Norway, having given his life to strengthening and unifying the nation. After his death, he was succeeded by his son, King Harald V of Norway.
