On August 7, 1957, Oliver Norvell Hardy, a famous actor, comedian and one half of the beloved comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy, passed away from a heart attack at 65 years old. Born on January 18, 1892 in Harlem, Georgia, Hardy developed a love for acting and started performing in silent films in the 1910s. He gained recognition for his first comedy series, Outwitting Dad in 1914. Through these and several other silent film comedy shorts, he also found fame as one half of the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, with Stan Laurel, and worked together for over 10 years in film and stage performances. Their comedic personas made them legendary amongst genre devotionals, and their films have often been deemed timeless classics, many of which were named the funniest films ever made. Hardy married thrice, first to Madelyn Saloshin in 1913, then Myrtle Reeves in 1921 and finally Lucille Jones since 1940. He is also survived by his two children, Oliver O. Hardy Jr., who passed away five days before his father, and Lucille Ogle Hardy. Hardy will be forever remembered for his comedic performances and his unparalleled contribution to the arts.
