(Obituary Headline) Omar Sharif, Internationally-Acclaimed Actor, Dies at Age 83 Omar Sharif, the internationally-known actor and three-time Golden Globe-winner, passed away in Cairo, Egypt on July 10, 2015 due to a heart attack at the age of 83. Born in Alexandria, Egypt on April 10, 1932, Sharif began his career as a bridge player before moving into acting, where he was known for roles in both English and Arabic language films, including Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), Funny Girl (1968), The Tamarind Seed (1974), The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964), and The 13th Warrior (1999). In addition to winning three Golden Globes for Lawrence of Arabia (Best Motion Picture Drama), Doctor Zhivago (Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama) and the French-language film, The Night of Counting the Years (1970), Sharif was also recognized with a César Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1965 for his role in Doctor Zhivago. Alongside his on-screen career, Sharif also became a race-car driver, claiming the first prize of La Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo in 1968. Throughout his professional career, Sharif brought to life iconic roles that earned him international fame. He will be dearly missed.
