She studied theatre and classics at the University of London, and went on to become a journalist for the Daily Mail. Her most famous work was Mary Poppins, a series of books about a magical nanny for which she won the British Authors Club Prize in 1935, and provided the source material for the successful Disney movie of the same name. She wrote many other novels, stories, plays, and even an opera. Travers was also active politically, serving Germany's émigré groups in the 1930s. Later in the decade, she campaigned fiercely against the bombing of civilians in World War II. Throughout her life, Travers traveled widely and was known for her intelligence and wit.
