Paul O’Grady, born in Birkenhead on 14 June 1955, passed away due to natural causes on 28 March 2023 at the age of 67. He was a renowned British comedian, TV personality and actor. Beginning his career in the late 1970s, O’Grady was known for his drag persona, Lily Savage. Starting with local gigs, the success of Lily Savage soon gained Paul international recognition and he appeared on shows such as Blankety Blank, Friday Night Live and The Lily Savage Show. In 2001, he launched his highly successful show, The Paul O’Grady Show, which ran for 11 years, winning seven BAFTA TV Awards, four Royal Television Society Awards and two National Television Awards during that time. Paul was a diversity campaigner and an LGBT+ advocate, taking part in numerous charity campaigns and fund raising events, such as his annual Pooch GBH dog walk in Margate which raised money to help the homeless and provide a safe place for those in need. In 2013 Paul was awarded the British LGBT Industry Award for the Outstanding Achievement and in 2015 he received the BFI Fellowship Award for his contribution to British Television. More recently, in 2021 O’Grady co-wrote a new comedy series for ITV2, entitled Dog’s Dinner. Paul is survived by his sons Robert and Danny. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
