Payne Stewart (born in 1957) passed away unexpectedly on October 25, 1999, at the age of 42. A devout golfer, Payne was the winner of 11 professional PGA tournaments, including 3 major championships - the 1989 PGA Championship, the 1991 U.S. Open, and the 1999 U.S. Open. He also was victorious at the 1982 World Cup of Golf and at the 1984 & 1985 PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedEx Cup. In addition to his championship wins, he also set multiple major records including the most consecutive fairways hit in a row with 36, the all-time PGA Tour money list for a single season at $2.52 million, and the most money won in a season without a win at $478,060. He was also part of the American team that won the Ryder Cup in 1999 and later was named the 1999 Male Player of the Year by the Golf Writers Association of America in recognition of his brilliant career. Besides his professional golf career, Payne was also known for helping support and promote various charities, as he was behind The Payne Stewart Foundation, The First Tee of the Ozarks and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield, Missouri. Payne will be missed deeply by family, friends, colleagues, and fans alike.
