Pete Maravich

American basketball player.

On January 5th, 1988, Peter Press Maravich (known as "Pistol" or "Pete") passed at the age of 40 due to a congenital heart defect. A professional basketball player from 1970 to 1980, Maravich played in the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans/Utah Jazz, and Boston Celtics. His college basketball career at Louisiana State University heralded him as one of the most promising players in the game. He was a five-time All-Star and set numerous records such as becoming the first player to average over 40 points in a single season. His career point total is still the fourth highest in Division I NCAA history. In 1987, Maravich was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and was named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1996. Maravich was known for his great shooting ability and flashy style of play, and remains a beloved figure in basketball history. Maravich is survived by his wife Jackie, daughter Melissa, and son Josh.
