The world-renowned actor Peter O'Toole died Wednesday, December 14th, 2013, at the age of 81. O'Toole's legacy spanned five decades, during which he starred in such renowned films as Lawrence of Arabia (for which he was nominated for eight Academy Awards, more than any other actor in history, and nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts 15 times, more than any other actor in history), The Lion in Winter, The Ruling Class, Good-bye Mr. Chips, Man of La Mancha, and My Favorite Year. Born in County Galway, Ireland in 1932, O'Toole worked as a journalist in England after attending school at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He began his acting career with the Bristol Old Vic Company, then rose to fame playing French King Henry II in the stage play The Lion in Winter. Despite being well respected for his talent, O'Toole also had a legendary reputation for wild nightlife. After his initial success, O'Toole continued to star in numerous films through the years. He was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the 2003 Academy Awards, and later won a Golden Globe for his work in the film, Venus, among other awards. O'Toole is survived by three daughters, Kate, Pat, and Lorcan, and two granddaughters, Celia and Stella.
