Peter Steele, the singer, songwriter and musician best known for fronting the metal band Type O Negative, passed away on April 14, 2010 at the age of 48. Born on January 4, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York, Steele earned a reputation early on as a leader in the heavy metal and gothic rock communities. Formed in 1989, Type O Negative's debut album Slow, Deep and Hard found immediate success and went on to be certified Gold in the United States. The band's second album, The Origin of The Feces, also went Gold, and Type O Negative's third, Bloody Kisses, earned the band their first Platinum certification. Steele worked with multiple other musical acts throughout the years, including his own bands Carnivore, Fallout and Affect. Steele also released his own solo album in 2005, entitled 110316. His unconventional visual appearance and distinctively deep, brooding voice made Steele an iconic figure in the metal and gothic rock scene. Throughout his career, Steele also wrote for various publications, including Metal Maniacs and Terrorizer. He is remembered fondly by fans and fellow musicians around the world. Steele died on Wednesday April 14, 2010, one month before his 48th birthday. He is survived by his parents, sister and bandmates.
