Carmine Persico, who died on 2019-03-07 at 85 years old, was an influential figure in American organized crime. He was a prominent leader of the Colombo family from the 1970s until his death, and for that position he earned the nickname "The Snake". During his tenure, he expanded the criminal organization into a more powerful presence in the underworld. He was also known for leading a faction in what was dubbed the Colombo War, a series of gangland conflicts that lasted a number of years. He was convicted and served time in prison for multiple offenses. Persico was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1933. He was an active participant in New York's crime scene and in numerous criminal activities. His death ends a legacy of decades of involvement in the Mafia.
