Pierre Trudeau, the fifteenth prime minister of Canada, passed away on September 28th, 2000 at the age of 80 surrounded by his family. He was born Joseph Phillippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau, in Montreal, Quebec. Trudeau was a Rhodes Scholar, law professor and an intellectual. He served as the fifteenth prime minister of Canada from 1968 to 1979, and again from 1980 to 1984. He was renowned for his passionate devotion to Canadian unity and constitutional protection of French-Canadian culture. He implemented the official bilingualism of Canada, the official amnesty for draft dodgers from the United States in 1971, and the repatriation of the Canadian Constitution with the inclusion of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982. Trudeau is remembered as one of the greatest Canadian prime ministers and a powerful leader with immense determination and insight. He will forever be seen as a iconic figure in Canada for his resilience, creative leadership, and great capacity for courage. May his memory live on forever as an inspiration to others.
