On August 6, 1978, His Holiness Paul VI, the 262nd Pope of the Catholic Church, died in Castel Gandolfo, Italy at the age of 80. Paul VI was born Giovanni Battista Montini on September 26, 1897. Paul VI became Pope in June of 1963, six weeks after the death of Pope John XXIII. During his tenure, he was a major figure in the Second Vatican Council and was integral in implementing reforms based on its decisions. He was outspoken in rejecting violence and war, and encouraged calm and meaningful dialogue among conflicting political, cultural, and religious groups during the 1960s and 1970s. Paul VI held unprecedented papal visits over the course of his pontificate, setting a precedent for those who would come after him. He was the first Pope to visit six continents and host a visit from an Ecumenical Patriarch. Paul VI was made a Cardinal in 1953 by Pope Pius XII and in 1964 was awarded the statesmanship Award of U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. He will be remembered as a kind and compassionate leader of the Catholic faith, with a deep commitment to peace and reconciliation. He will be deeply missed by all those who appreciated his teachings and the legacy he left behind.
