The Royal Family is saddened to announce the unexpected passing of Prince William of Gloucester, elder son of Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, and her late husband, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, on August 28, 1972 at the age of 30. The Prince, born on December 18, 1941, was a well-regarded member of the Royal Family, highly respected for his extensive charitable work and commitment to public service. Prince William served in the British Army for six years as a lieutenant in the Royal Scots Greys regiment. He was an avid aviation enthusiast and was the first member of the Royal Family to receive a pilot's license. His love of flying was evidenced in the work he did for the Royal Aero Club and the Air Training Corps. In 1972, the Prince married his college sweetheart, Lady Katharine Brabourne daughter of Lord and Lady Brabourne. The marriage was a happy one until the Prince's sudden and untimely death. Prince William's death is mourned by his entire Royal Family, his wife Lady Katharine, and the many people who knew and loved him.
