On December 5, 1969, Princess Alice of Battenberg, mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and formerly Grand Duchess of Hesse, passed away at the age of 84. Born in 1885 as Princess Alice of Battenberg, she was the youngest of the four children of Prince Louis of Battenberg and his wife Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine, known as “born princesses” due to their royal lineage. Alice was married to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark in 1903 and had five children, including Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. The family lived in Greece until 1917, when Alice moved to the United Kingdom to raise her children there, due to increasing political instability in Greece. Alice devoted her life to philanthropic deeds, like visiting and helping the sick and poor. Through her visits and compassion, Alice was awarded with the Order of the Red Cross and the Order of Elizabeth. Princess Alice is cherished and fondly remembered by many as a beloved and generous woman who devoted her life to serving others.
