On November 3rd, 2001, Queen Sophie of Greece and Denmark passed away quietly in Athens, Greece at the age of 87. Born on June 14th, 1914 in Athens, she was the daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and the sister of King Paul of Greece. For much of her life, she lived abroad, particularly in Germany, where she had married Prince Christoph of Hesse in 1930. She lived in Germany until the end of World War II, during which she held Nazi sympathies and was closely linked to the party. The marriage eventually ended in divorce in 1960, following her return to Greece in 1952. She accompanied her brother and sister-in-law, Queen Frederika of Greece to her range of official engagements, and survive her brother after his death in 1964. Queen Sophie is widely remembered for her philanthropy, particularly in art and religious issues. Over the decades, she served as a patron of numerous churches and museums, as well as a protector of archaeological sites across the country. Queen Sophie will be deeply missed by her surviving family and all those who knew and admired her.
