This is to inform the public of the passing of Puyi, a Chinese monarch who served as the last Emperor of China from the Qing Dynasty and the 12th and final ruler of the Manchu-led Qing Dynasty of Imperial China. He passed away on October 17, 1967, at the age of 61. During his short reign as emperor of China from 1908 to 1912, Puyi was subject to a series of regents. After being removed from the imperial throne in 1912, he was briefly detained in a royal residence in Beijing and then exiled to Manchuria during the Chinese Civil War. He also was the nominal ruler of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo from 1934 to 1945. At the end of World War II in 1945, Puyi was detained by Soviet troops and later taken captive by the Communist Party of China, remaining in Chinese custody until 1950. Afterwards, Puyi lived quietly in Beijing as a private citizen. Puyi’s legacy as an emperor has been mixed. Though his reign was brief and largely symbolic, sadly Puyi’s tenure has been forever linked with the fall of imperial China. He will long be remembered for his role in the Qing Dynasty and his place in Chinese history.

Those men who, in war, seek to preserve their lives at any rate commonly die with shame and ignominy, while those who look upon death as common to all, and unavoidable, and are only solicitous to die with honour, oftener arrive at old age and, while they live, live happier. Xenophon
