We are saddened to report the death of Rick James, the Grammy-nominated funk and soul singer-songwriter. He passed away on August 6th, 2004, at the age of 56. Rick, born James Ambrose Johnson Jr., was a talented producer, guitarist, and singer-songwriter from Buffalo, New York. He was known as an innovator of funk music, often dubbed the "King of Punk Funk". His iconic 1981 single "Super Freak" reached multiplatinum status worldwide and made him a household name. Rick released numerous albums throughout his career, including the iconic classics "Come Get It!" and "Garden of Love". His music, while sometimes controversial, remained popular with audiences of all generations. A talented musician and performer, Rick leaves behind a passionate and inspirational legacy. His infectious sound and larger-than-life persona made him a beloved figure in the music industry and to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his musical greatness, his unbridled passion, and will remain an inspiration to many.
