Robert Mueller, an accomplished Army officer, civil servant, jurist, lawyer, military officer, official, politician, and soldier, passed away on March 20, 2026 at the age of 81. He was born on August 7, 1944 in New York City to parents John Mueller and Margaret Mueller. Mueller dedicated his life to serving his country in various roles. He graduated from Princeton University in 1966 and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps, earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and leadership during the Vietnam War. After leaving the military, Mueller attended the University of Virginia School of Law and upon graduation in 1973, began his legal career at a private firm in San Francisco. In 1982, he joined the United States Attorney's Office in San Francisco as an assistant United States attorney. He later became the United States attorney for the Northern District of California in 1998. In 2001, Mueller was appointed to serve as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by President George W. Bush. During his 12-year tenure, he oversaw the transformation of the FBI into a more intelligence-based agency and played a crucial role in counterterrorism efforts. After leaving the FBI, Mueller served as the special counsel for the Department of Justice, where he led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections. His work on this high-profile case earned him national recognition and admiration for his dedication to upholding the law. Mueller was a highly respected figure in government and was known for his integrity, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to justice. He leaves behind a legacy of service and will be remembered for his significant contributions to the country. He is survived by his wife, Ann, and their two children, as well as his brother and sister.
