Robert Stack, 84, died on Wednesday, May 14th, 2003. Robert Stack was best known for his roles in classic film and television, having appeared in over 75 productions from 1939 to his death. He is especially renowned for his portrayal of Eliot Ness in the television series The Untouchables (1959-1963), for which he won the 1960 Emmy for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Series. He also appeared in the films Airplane! (1980) and 1941 (1979) and narrated the popular Unsolved Mysteries series (1987-2003). Stack was born Charles Langford Modini Stack in 1921 in Los Angeles, California, to James Langford Stack, a corporate executive, and Elizabeth Modini Stack, a former silent-film actress and dance teacher. He attended Dorsey High School, University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University and graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Southern California in 1944. At the beginning of his career, Stack performed in numerous radio programs throughout the 1940s. He went on to star in many film and television series throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Stack also directed several episodes of The Name of the Game, an NBC series he was part of in 1968. In February 2000, Stack received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cementing his mark on the entertainment industry. He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Bowe-Stack, four children, and five grandchildren.
