Roy Lichtenstein, a pioneering pop artist best known for his comic book-style paintings, died on September 29th, 1997 at the age of 73. A luminary of the 60s Pop Art movement, Lichtenstein created a unique style of art that drew inspiration from comic books and advertisements. His use of bright colors, Ben-Day dots, intense brushstrokes, and text-based imagery revolutionized the way in which media imagery was incorporated into painting. His most recognizable works, such as "Drowning Girl," "Whaam!," and "Girl With Ball," are characterized by their vibrant, sometimes humorous compositions and remain largely influential in the current art landscape. The native New Yorker earned his fine arts degree from Ohio State University and began teaching at the State University of New York at Oswego. Throughout his career, Lichtenstein would gain national and international recognition, receiving honorary degrees, acclaim in engagements around the world, and a prestigious Emmy award.
