Sam Shepard, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, actor, and author, passed away July 27th, 2017 at an age of 73. Born November 5th, 1943 in Fort Sheridan, IL, Shepard began his career in theater and writing in the 1960s. He was soon established in New York City, acting in several avant-garde productions and writing more plays and screenplays. He wrote his first successful play in 1964, and went on to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for his play Buried Child. His plays often featured a variety of characters and motifs drawn from his own experiences, and his writing style soon became well-recognized in the American theater circuit. In addition to his accolades in theater, he was an accomplished actor. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he toured with Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue. He appeared in several films, including Days of Heaven, The Right Stuff, Steel Magnolias, and Snow Falling on Cedars. At the time of his death, Shepard was survived by his two children, Jesse and Hannah, and his partner, writer and director Jessica Lange. We offer our deepest condolences to Shepard’s family and friends at this time of mourning.
