On August 26, 2018, Neil Simon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and screenwriter, died in Manhattan, aged 91. As one of the most successful and prolific playwrights in the 20th century, Simon wrote more than 30 plays and more than two dozen movie scripts, winning multiple Tony Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, and other accolades during his career. Born in the Bronx in 1927 and raised in New York City, the son of Jewish immigrants, Simon took to playwriting, inspired by his older brother Danny’s comedies and sketches. After serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Simon began to work as a professional writer, his first writing gigs in television, garnering him a prime spot on The Phil Silvers Show. Simon’s first successful play, Come Blow Your Horn, debuted on Broadway in 1961 and launched a long and storied career of playwriting. His most well-known works include The Odd Couple, California Suite, Barefoot in the Park (for which he won his first Tony Award), The Sunshine Boys, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Lost in Yonkers (for which he won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama), and The Goodbye Girl. Simon was also renowned for his work in television and the movie industry. His movies include The Goodbye Girl, The Out-of-Towners, The Heartbreak Kid, Murder by Death, and The Cheap Detective. Simon is survived by his children Maria, Bryn, and Nancy, his second wife actress Elaine Joyce, and a host of fans and admirers around the world. He will be greatly missed.
