Stephen Sondheim, the ground-breaking composer, lyricist, and songwriter, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 26th 2021, aged 91. An eight-time Tony Award and Academy Award-winning artist, Sondheim’s career spanned over six decades, making him one of the great iconoclastic figures of contemporary musical theater. He was also the recipient of a prestigious Pulitzer Prize and the Kennedy Center Honors Award in 1993. Sondheim was born in New York City in 1930. An early prodigy in music, he studied composition at George School of Pennsylvania and at Williams College before making his Broadway debut in 1956. He is best known for his works in musical theater such as "West Side Story," "Gypsy," "Company," "Sweeney Todd," "A Little Night Music," "Sunday In The Park With George" and "Into The Woods,” among several others. He also compiled and edited his own work in "Look I Made A Hat," a book of poems and lyrics, and taught classes of playwriting and songwriting at New York University. Sondheim’s work will continue to be remembered and celebrated for many years to come.
