The world lost a brilliant mind when Satoru Iwata, CEO of Nintendo, passed away on July 11, 2015 at the age of 55. Born in Sapporo, Japan, Mr. Iwata was a computer programmer and video game designer. After graduating from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1982, he then began his career with HAL Laboratory, a company eventually acquired by Nintendo, where he worked on several games for the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64, including EarthBound and Super Smash Bros. He was promoted to president of HAL Laboratory, Inc. in 1993 and started working closely on various Nintendo projects since then. In 2000, Mr. Iwata was appointed president of Nintendo, launching the iconic GameCube and Nintendo DS before devoting the majority of his presidency to the highly successful Wii Console. He also notably provided guidance to the Nintendo DS's next generation console – 3DS – and the upcoming Wii U. Mr. Iwata was known for his immense passion for video games and his devotion to his fans. He was beloved by developers and gamers alike, and he was widely credited for transforming Nintendo from a company in crisis to a gaming powerhouse. As president, he championed the idea that video games should be for everyone, making both developmental and financial risks to push for innovation, a trend that can be seen today in the industry. Mr. Iwata was also incredibly active on social media, often interacting directly with fans and sharing his vision for the future of gaming. His work and influence will be remembered for years to come, and the world grieves the loss of such an incredible individual.
