Stanley Kubrick, the ingenious and acclaimed filmmaker, died on March 7, 1999, in his sleep at the age of 70. Born in New York in 1928, Kubrick began making movies while still in high school and never stopped. A perfectionist and a recluse, he was one of the most widely acclaimed and influential filmmakers of our time. His movies, many of which were box office flops when first released, are now considered masterpieces. Among his most famous are "Spartacus," "Dr. Strangelove," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining."
