Sugar Ray Robinson—born Walker Smith, Jr—died peacefully at the age of 67 on April 12th, 1989. His legacy as "the greatest boxer who ever lived" endures. Robinson, who was born in Detroit, Michigan, May 3, 1921, held the world welterweight title for five non-consecutive years in the 1940s, then went on to become the first boxer in history to win a divisional world championship five times. As an amateur, Robinson won the welterweight and middleweight Golden Gloves titles in 1939. As a professional, he won world championships in the welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight divisions--and then went on to defend them 10 times. He was an unparalleled fighting machine. His career was defined not just by his skill in the ring, but also by his showmanship. He was an expert at drawing attention to his bouts and taking on the biggest names and toughest opponents—Kid Gavilan, Jake LaMotta, and Carmen Basilio, to name just a few. Robinson retired for the last time in 1965 and jazz as a performer. His dancing and singing career lasted from 1965 to 1978, at which point he retired due to health and financial issues. Robinson left behind a beloved wife, Millie, four sons, and millions of fans.
