It is with great sadness that the world mourns the loss of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who tragically passed away on April 20th 2014 at the age of 76. He was a former professional boxer, who was active in the 1960s and 1970s, and achieved his greatest success in 1966 when he defeated John Summer to win the title of Middleweight boxing champion. Carter also famously spent 19 years in prison as a result of a wrongful conviction for a triple-homicide in Paterson, NJ. Rubin Carter was an activist for great causes, especially for those that were wrongfully accused or convicted for crimes. He became well-known through his autobiography, The Sixteenth Round: From Number 1 Contender to number 45472, and the movie, "The Hurricane", which was based on his life story. He is survived by a daughter, Lisa, who will miss him forever. He has left behind a legacy that will be remembered by all who have been touched by his message of hope and justice.

Those men who, in war, seek to preserve their lives at any rate commonly die with shame and ignominy, while those who look upon death as common to all, and unavoidable, and are only solicitous to die with honour, oftener arrive at old age and, while they live, live happier. Xenophon
