Lasorda was born and raised in Pennsylvania, where he played semi-professional baseball before signing a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually managing the Dodgers for twenty seasons, from 1976 to 1996. During his tenure, the team won two World Series titles, four National League pennants, and eight division titles. Lasorda was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.
