Upton Sinclair (September 20, 1878 - November 25, 1968), a noted American author and political activist, died peacefully in his home in Bound Brook, New Jersey on November 25, 1968 at the age of 90. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Sinclair was a popular and prolific author of nearly 100 books and other works. His strong social and political advocacy was displayed in many of his works, including The Jungle, a book about the unsanitary practices of the meat-packing industry and its effects on workers in early 20th-century America. Sinclair wrote in several genres, including science fiction, historical fiction, drama, and poetry, but his uniquely passionate and committed investigations of the human condition resonated strongly with readers and activists. In 1934 he ran for governor of California on the platform of the "End Poverty in California" movement. His candidacy drew the attention of the major newspapers but ultimately and unexpectedly failed at the polls. His place in history as one of America's best-known authors and his remarkable life of activism will be long remembered.
