Valerie Harper, beloved actress and advocate for early cancer detection, passed away on August 30, 2019 at the age of 80. Valerie is best known for her Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning portrayal of the lovable Rhoda Morgenstern on the classic sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1970 through 1977, and later its spinoff series, Rhoda, from 1974 to 1978. Valerie acted in numerous other popular television and film roles throughout her five-decade career, including starring in the groundbreaking show Valerie from 1986 through 1991. Her stage career included Broadway roles, including as Vera Charles opposite Carol Channing in the original production of Hello, Dolly! in 1965. Valerie was an outspoken advocate of breast cancer research and early detection, and spoke candidly about her own battle with lung cancer in 2013. Valerie is survived by her daughter Cristina, son-in-law Tony, grandson Sebastian, and numerous friends and admirers. She will be remembered for her wit, poise, and legacy as a beloved and talented actress.
