On May 17th 2022, it was reported that the iconic musician, composer and performer Vangelis, passed away at the age of 79. Born in Greece in 1943, Vangelis was an incredibly influential and versatile artist who created some of the most recognizable electronic music in the world. He won multiple awards including an Oscar, four Grammys, a Golden Globe and an Ivor Novello. Vangelis's career as a composer began in the early 1960s as a member of the band Formynx, with whom he headlined the 1963 WR Athens festival. Following a brief stint as the keyboardist for The Forminxs, Vangelis would embark on a highly successful solo career which included several albums and notable film soundtracks, such as Chariots of Fire, Blade Runner and Alexander. In addition to his influence on the world of music, Vangelis was an avid painter, a philanthropist and a passionate environmentalist. He devoted much of his time and energy to charitable causes, helping to fund medical research and grassroots ecological initiatives. Vangelis will be remembered by many as an inimitable pioneer and an inspiration to millions around the world.
