Velupillai Prabhakaran sadly passed away on May 19th 2009 due to an attack on his convoy. He was 54 years old. Prabhakaran was a Sri Lankan revolutionary and political leader who came to prominence in the late 1970s as the founder and leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Under his leadership, the LTTE waged a separatist campaign in the north and east of the island with the goal of establishing an independent Tamil state. He is remembered as a passionate and committed leader, an inspiration to the Tamil population of Sri Lanka. His death marked an end to the Sri Lankan Civil War, after decades of violence. He is survived by his wife, his son, Charles Anthony, and a host of admirers and supporters, both in Sri Lanka and around the world. He will be missed.
