On April 17th 1975, the world lost Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, an Indian philosopher, academic, and statesman. He passed away at age 86. Born on September 5th 1888, in Thiruttani India, Radhakrishnan was regarded as one of the most distinguished scholars of the twentieth century, and in 1902 became one of the youngest students to receive a degree at the Madras Presidency College. His intellectual career started in 1909, when he became an assistant Lecturer at the Madras Presidency college. Later in 1921 he was appointed Professor of Philosophy at the University of Mysore, where he stayed until 1931. He later served as a Visiting Professor at Oxford University from 1936 to 1939. A noted international scholar and deeply influential thinker, Radhakrishnan wrote extensively on philosophy and religion, and was also a prolific author of more than sixty books. He was a leading figure in modern Indian philosophical and religious thought, viewed by many today as one of India's most important intellectual voices. Radhakrishnan was highly respected for both his scholarly contribution to the world of thought, and his statesmanship. He served India as Vice-President from 1952-62, and as the nation's second President from 1962-1967. The legacy of Radhakrishnan's work continues to resonate around the world, influencing and impacting generations of thinkers, philosophers, and leaders. He will always be fondly remembered.
