It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of C. Rajagopalachari, a noted freedom fighter, political leader and beloved figure in India. Mr. Rajagopalachari, who is commonly referred to as 'Rajaji,' died on December 25, 1972, at the age of 94. Rajaji was a leading member of the Indian National Congress who served as Premier of Madras from 1937 to 1939. He was instrumental in the birth of Indian independence and held a number of positions within his country. Subsequent to the 1947 Partition of India, he served as the Governor-General of India, the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of External Affairs and lastly Chief Minister of the State government of Madras. Rajaji was a leading proponent of progressive and liberal policies and the establishment of the temples Traiyambakeshwar and Thillai. He also advocated the abolishment of zamindari, the establishment of the All India Services and the introduction of the banking system in India. He wrote extensively and is best known for his spiritual works such as The English Teacher (1944) and Mahabharata Retold (1962). His privilege to be in service to his country was a source of great pride and accomplishment for Rajaji. He will be remembered fondly and missed by all who knew him.
